PAIR OF SHOES
CH1981.55.1-2
Cream satin court style with high ankle strap. Small buckle on front. Louis heels. Size 5. Label mostly obscured: " Hicks..."
Information supplied by June Swann, world authority on historic shoes visiting from UK, during her inspection of shoe collection 18th October 1993.
Very unusual. Very 'tarty' for wedding shoes. Based on 1890s court style, plus ankle strap. Vaguely imitating Cromwell shoe with buckle trim and edging. Not very good workmanship. Two-inch Louis heel. Has been poorly repaired - recovered ramp, stitching holes evident around sole etc. Has been worn outdoors and on dance floor. The silk is shreddy like an 1890s Edwardian silk. 'Hicks, at...Sons,.....' (obscured). Made in England. Wood heel. June will check data. 'LEATHER/ MADE INENGLAND/ WOOD HEEL' (embossed on underside).
Earlier than 1920s. Likely to be 1890s-1910. May have been mother's wedding shoes revamped and worn by daughter at her wedding. May have been re-covered then.
