    Da Vinci Machines at WA Maritime Museum

    Experience Leonardo da Vinci’s genius first-hand when Da Vinci Machines opens at the Western Australian Maritime Museum on Saturday 19 December.

    This exciting exhibition features 60 of his visionary inventions in the areas of flying machines, nautical innovations and machines of war, alongside 15 beautifully crafted replicas of famous da Vinci artworks.

    Recent First World War discoveries at WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder

    Visitors to the Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder now have the opportunity to view the Australian War Memorial’s extraordinary travelling exhibition Remember me: the lost diggers of Vignacourt.

    WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said it was a privilege to display the unique First World War exhibition, an exquisite collection of black and white images printed from the original glass-plate negatives, as part of the Museum’s Centenary of Service commemorative calendar.

    Nature photography exhibition to show at the WA Museum – Albany

    The 2015 Australian Geographic ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year collection will open at the Western Australian Museum – Albany this weekend, with Western Australian photographers winning two of the categories.

    The competition’s overall winning image ‘Feathered Symmetry’ by David Stowe will also be on display. Captured in New South Wales, it shows a white-winged tern (Chlidonias leucopterusI) stretching its wings, ready for take-off.

    Stories about Indigenous Australians at war presented at the Western Australian Museum – Perth

    Touring exhibition Indigenous Australians at war from the Boer War to the present is now on display the Western Australian Museum – Perth tomorrow.

    The exhibition from the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne presents Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ stories from all over Australia.

    WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said it is important to acknowledge the Aboriginal men and women who served their country during wars.

    New exhibition at the WA Museum – Geraldton explores role of Royal Australian Navy in WWI

    Touring exhibition War at Sea – the Navy in WWI opens at the Western Australian Museum – Geraldton this weekend.

    It tells the story of Australia’s first submarine AE1 which disappeared while patrolling the seas near present day New Guinea on 14 September 1914. No trace of the vessel or its 35 hands has been found to this day.

    WA Museum – Geraldton Manager Catherine Belcher said it is important to share the experiences of Australian sailors in the First World War.

    Santa to visit the WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s beach

    The Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder is bringing the beach and a special guest to the Goldfields next weekend.

    To coincide with the annual Saint Barbara’s Festival, children will have the opportunity to meet Santa and participate in free activities during the Museum’s Open Day on Saturday 5 December.

    WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder Manager Zoe Scott said there will be art and craft activities, a hula hoop competition, face-painting, community stalls, water-based games, and lots of fun to be had on the beach.

    Contemporary Aboriginal fibre art showcased at the Western Australian Museum – Perth

    An exhibition showcasing fibre work that has become a fundamental part of Central and Western Desert culture will be on display at the Western Australian Museum in Perth from Saturday 7 November.

    Pampa Mara Tjanpi: Tjanpi works by elderly women from the Ngaanyatjarra Lands  features an array of fibre artworks emerging from Tjanpi Desert Weavers, the dynamic social enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council.

    An exhibition encompassing the stories of the first recorded European (Dutch) landings in Shark Bay, Western Australia, will be on display at the Kalbarri Shire Offices from this Friday 23 October.

    The Accidental Encounters: the Dutch connection exhibition was developed by the Western Australian Museum in preparation for next year’s 400th anniversary of Dirk Hartog’s landing in Shark Bay.

    British Museum exhibition bound for WA

    The Western Australian Museum has achieved another international coup for Perth by securing the British Museum exhibition, A History of the World in 100 Objects from February 2016.

    Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said this was the third major international exhibition presented as part of the WA Museum's special relationship with the British Museum.

    "The WA Museum has done it again, securing this truly significant exhibition and showing it to Australian audiences first, before it continues on its national tour," he said.

    New Aboriginal art movement showcased at Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder

    An exhibition of unique works from an Aboriginal art movement emerging from the Western Desert will open this week at the Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

    Warakurna: All the Stories Got into our Minds and Eyes features paintings and sculptures which were produced at Warakurna, a community at the foot of the Rawlinson Ranges in Western Australia, 300 kilometres west of Uluru (Ayers Rock), and will be on display from 19 September 2015.

    New fossil discovery confirms evolution of kangaroo

    A scientific collaboration that spanned more than two decades has resulted in the discovery and naming of one of the most complete and preserved fossil skeleton of a new species of kangaroo, dating 14 million years.

    Scientists from the Western Australian Museum, University of New South Wales and Queensland Museum recently published the paper that named the new species, Ganguroo robustiter.

    WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said this discovery is significant to science for many reasons.

    Science Week at the WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder

    The Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder will host two events to celebrate National Science Week.

    On Thursday 20 August, the WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder will open late for the Goldfields Education Mining Industry Alliance’s Science Week at Your Museum.

    WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder Regional Manager Zoe Scott said the doors will re-open from 5.30pm – 7pm, especially for the free event.

    “The community is welcome to visit the exhibits, and there will be a range of hands-on activities relating to mining and light for school students,” Ms Scott said.
