HMAS Ovens at WA Maritime Museum

The Western Australian Museum’s much-loved HMAS Ovens submarine is about to begin its face lift and make-over, which will include the repair and repainting of the hull surface to return the vessel to its former glory.

Ovens will close temporarily on 9th January to allow staff and contractors time to prepare the submarine for works.

The former navy submarine is a popular exhibit at the WA Maritime Museum. However, the external hull and paintwork require urgent treatment to ensure the submarine’s future as a key part of WA’s naval history.

Western Australian Museum Chief Executive Officer, Alec Coles said the Ovens, as an example of the famous Oberon class submarine, represents a significant part of Australia’s naval heritage.

“Once a key part Australia’s Cold War capability, Ovens reflects Western Australia’s long history, and continuing role, as a key strategic submarine base," Mr Coles said.

“We are delighted that the McGowan Government has provided this investment to carry out these crucial works and we look forward to continuing to honor this significant symbol of WA’s naval history.”

HMAS Ovens was initially launched in 1967. After decommissioning in 1995, the submarine was gifted to the Western Australian Museum and docked on the historic No.1 Slipway adjacent to the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle.

The McGowan Government committed $3.5 million in the 2022-2023 budget to complete the maintenance works on the former Royal Australian Navy Oberon class submarine, and associated heritage restoration works at Victoria Quay.

Eptec Marine Proprietary Limited specialises in such preservation and heritage rehabilitation work.  A priority will be the safe containment, capture and removal of all existing coating products, and so Eptec will encapsulate the entire submarine in a scaffolding and membrane structure. The structure is designed to allow a safe working environment for contractors and to ensure containment of all material generated during the works.
