The Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder will host its inaugural Takeover Museum Day this week, allowing students to run the Museum for a day.

Students from Eastern Goldfields College in Years 11 and 12 who are studying a Certificate II in Tourism will take on roles at the Museum on Thursday, 25 June.

WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder Regional Manager Zoe Scott said the students will have the opportunity to interact with visitors and work behind-the-scenes.

“They will work in small groups on exhibition preparation, collection management, they’ll greet visitors at reception and assist with public programs and educational activities,” Ms Scott said.

“We have met with the 20 students who will be on site this week to brief them about the tasks they will be completing and the protocols we have here at the Museum.”

The initiative is inspired by the annual Takeover Day in the United Kingdom where children and teenagers are given the opportunity to work alongside museum staff and take on meaningful roles.

“Takeover Museum Day is a great way to allow students to apply the skills they learn at school, and in return we hope they become regular visitors,” Ms Scott said.
