This week, communities in the Kimberley will meet members of the WA Museum’s New Museum Project team and participate in discussions about the New Museum for WA.

Scheduled to open in 2020, the New Museum will be the flagship museum for Western Australia and will share stories and collections from around the State.

WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said a core principle of the New Museum is that it will be developed in partnership with the people of WA.

“Over the next five and a half years the people of WA will have the opportunity to help shape the stories and ideas that are included in the New Museum.

“Our New Museum Project team will be meeting with local communities from across the State to share the stories that are important to them, looking to the past, present and the future of Western Australia,” Mr Coles said.

Team members Bill Seager and Nigel Bond will be attending a series of community meetings to share the process of developing the New Museum and to connect with local Kimberley people.

"During this trip we hope to establish an enduring relationship between the people of the Kimberley and the WA Museum.

“We are very keen to hear from as many people as we can, and to meet with local people to start a dialogue on how to share important stories from this region,” Mr Coles said.

“We want people to remember that not only is the WA Museum serving the whole of WA, but that we want as many people as possible to contribute to the Museum as possible – this way we really will tell the story of our state through the voices of its people!”

At the same time a WA Museum Development Services team will be touring the region, providing support and curatorial advice to regional museums, particularly those participating in the Remembering Them project, as they develop exhibitions about the social impact and human cost of the First World War on regional communities.    is one of many national Centenary of Service projects.
