WA Museum Anthropology and Archaeology staff have had the pleasure of hosting special guests from Kalumburu, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Kwini Traditional Owners Ian Waina, Bernadette Waina and Dorothy Djanghara were in Perth recently with Rock Art Australia CEO Samantha Hamilton and researcher Pauline Heaney, preparing for Ian’s upcoming public lecture at the WA Museum Boola Bardip.

After catching up with former WA Museum Head of Human Studies Dr Ian Crawford, and former Kalumburu Parish Priest Father Anscar, the group visited the Collections and Research Centre to connect with archives and materials that document the long history of Kwini people recording, performing and sharing their stories through rock art, dance, song and contemporary art. A significant portion of the collections were made by Ian Crawford, who worked closely with the Waina family, and many other Kalumburu community members, over several decades from the 1960s on.

Ian Waina’s upcoming talk Two Ways to See: A rock art research journey, co-presented with Professor Andy Gleadow, explores the relationships and collaborations between Kwini people and the researchers they work with, focusing on some of the most significant rock art projects to be undertaken in Kwini and Balanggarra country to date.
