Experience Antarctica at the Museum of GeraldtonNews | Created 23 Aug 2019 A spectacular virtual reality adventure that takes viewers on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to the mysterious continent of Antarctica will open at the Museum of Geraldton on Friday 30 August. The Antarctica Experience uses the latest 360-degree, high-definition virtual reality technology to transport viewers to the frozen continent where they’ll explore Antarctica from a helicopter cockpit, get up close to an adorable penguin colony, and witness the spectacular Southern Lights. Audiences will see first-hand the fascinating work of Australian scientists at Davis Station in understanding climate change, managing eco-systems and conserving the unique wildlife. This ground-breaking immersive experience is the work of WA film-maker Briege Whitehead, of White Spark Pictures, who partnered with BAFTA award-winning director Phil Harper, known for his work on David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef VR Dive. The film has already proven successful with sell-out seasons at the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle and the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. Ms Whitehead said she’s excited to continue taking the experience to other parts of the country and the world. “My vision for this film is to bring audiences to a place that’s not easily accessible, so that no matter where you are you have the opportunity to experience and connect to Antarctica and learn about the impact of climate change,” she said. “To me, bringing this experience to regional cities and towns is just as important as taking it internationally. As a young girl who grew up in regional WA, who was so fascinated with the mysterious place at the bottom of the globe, I know I would have loved to see something like this in my town.” Museum of Geraldton Manager Leigh O’Brien said The Antarctica Experience is a must-see for everyone. “Antarctica feels so mysterious and far away,” Ms O’Brien said. “This virtual reality adventure really opens your eyes to a truly spectacular place and allows you to experience it in a real, exciting and educational way. It’s hard to put into words just how special this experience is, no matter your age, background or education, you’re sure to be blown away.” The Antarctica Experience will screen at the Museum of Geraldton from 30 August to 20 October 2019. The Antarctica Experience is proudly supported by the Western Australian Museum, Screenwest, Lotterywest and Screen Australia. White Spark Pictures travelled to Antarctica with the support of the Australian Antarctic Program.
