Scientifically accurate artwork of a Spinosaurus from which the animatronic dinosaur will be constructed

The Western Australian Museum will bring to life the extraordinary dinosaurs of the Earth’s Cretaceous period in a spine-tingling, custom-made exhibition featuring more than 20 life-size animatronic models.

Dinosaur Discovery: Lost Creatures of the Cretaceous is currently in development and will premiere here in Perth on April 11 next year when the dinosaurs inhabit specially created, authentic Cretaceous era environments at the Museum.

WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said the exhibition will highlight the most diverse range of dinosaurs from any era, ever to have walked the Earth.

“During the Cretaceous period, 145-65 million years ago, the world looked very different to the way it does today,” Mr Coles said.

“Recent finds and a re-evaluation of previous dinosaur research are changing the way we look at and understand dinosaurs, this scientifically accurate exhibition, specially created by the WA Museum, will encourage visitors to learn more about these incredible creatures.”

Dinosaur Discovery replicas include a 16 metres long and 10 metres high Brachiosaurus, a 14 metres long and 5.4 metres high Spinosaurus, a section dedicated to Australian dinosaurs including rarely seen before species, and more than 1,000 plant specimens showing the vegetation of the time

“This exhibition will engage a range of audiences with its authenticity and interactivity,” Mr Coles said.

“As well as the life-size animatronic models made to the Museum’s very exacting scientific specifications, we are developing an extremely exciting 3D augmented reality interactive component.

“This is cutting edge technology we haven’t seen in Western Australia before.”

Tickets to Dinosaur Discovery: Lost Creatures of the Cretaceous will go on sale next year and will cost $20 for adults, $15 for concession holders, $12.50 for children and $10 per head for pre-booked education and children’s groups.
