One of the winning submissions from The West Australian photographer Nic Ellis

The work of WA’s most exciting news photographers has been captured in the 2016 WA Press Photographer of the Year exhibition, currently on display at the Western Australian Museum in Perth.

WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said the Museum is delighted to host this year’s exhibition.

“This exhibition gives eyewitness accounts of this State’s major news events, sporting moments and incredible personal stories, captured by Western Australian photographers over the past year,” Mr Coles said.

“These are images of the events that shaped Western Australia and I would encourage everyone to go and see them.”

Staff photographer with The West Australian, Nic Ellis, was crowned WA Press Photographer of the Year for an impressive collection featuring images of UWA forensic anthropologist, Dan Franklin with a skull from the 17th century Batavia massacre, the captivating Giants, Guildford Grammar School students Lawson and Quinn Harperon of the banks of the Swan River ahead of the ANZAC centenary and volunteers struggling to help one of more than 20 pilot whales stranding themselves on jagged rocks at Bunbury Port.

Organisers of the awards received 747 images from 434 entrants. The awards are divided into nine categories: Portfolio, Spot News, News Feature, Portrait, Sport, Feature, Picture Story, Suburban and Country. The overall, suburban and country prizes are judged from a portfolio of the entrant’s best four images for the year.

The winning images and those selected as finalists from each category are on display at the WA Museum in Perth until Sunday 24 April, 2016.
