The Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder is hosting a family day on 10 July as part of the WA Museum’s NAIDOC Week calendar of events.

This year’s national theme is ‘We all Stand on Sacred Ground’ which celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ unique connection to land.

WA Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder Regional Manager Zoe Scott said the Museum invites people of all ages to take part in its NAIDOC Family Day.

“The day begins at 10am with Aboriginal crafts and singing in traditional language with elder Josie Boyle, a sausage sizzle, and art and craft activities for the kids,” Ms Scott said.

At 10.30am and 12.30pm traditional dance group ‘Ngadju Dancers’ will perform in the courtyard.

“It will be a fantastic opportunity for people to observe, participate and sample Aboriginal culture and traditions,” Ms Scott said.

In addition, there will be kangaroo stew, kangaroo tail and damper to taste.

The day’s activities wrap-up at 2pm.

WA Museum CEO Alec Coles said the Museum is proud to support and participate in NAIDOC Week each year and encourages its visitors to take part in events organised across its metropolitan and regional sites.

“It is important that NAIDOC Week is embraced by all Australians as we seek to promote better understanding of the place of Australia’s first peoples in our nation,” Mr Coles said.

“NAIDOC stands for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week.

“Now events are organised by communities across Australia and the Museum is proud to be part of sharing that very significant sense of people and place.”

The WA Museum’s Albany and Perth sites will also be celebrating NAIDOC Week from 5-12 July. Information about the activities can be found at http://museum.wa.gov.au/
