Anne Frank

An exhibition reflecting on the life and legacy of Anne Frank will open at the Museum of the Great Southern.

The Let Me Be Myself – The Story of Anne Frank exhibition follows the life of Anne Frank from her birth in Frankfurt, Germany in 1929 to her death in Bergen-Belsen in 1945.

Anne Frank may well be the most well-known victim of the Holocaust. Persecuted for being Jewish, Anne and her family went into hiding in a secret annex during World War Two. During her stay in hiding, Anne kept a diary, which was then published after the War.

Anne Frank’s diary reveals what life in hiding was like and helps us understand and empathise with the millions of victims of anti-Semitism.

Museum of the Great Southern Regional Manager Ms Catherine Salmaggi said it is truly an honour to have a world-renowned exhibition on show in the region.

“I believe the exhibition will attract people of all ages as the story of Anne Frank is one that resonates with both older and younger people, and the themes of prejudice and discrimination are still relevant today,” Ms Salmaggi said.

Presented by the Anne Frank Australia Exhibition in conjunction with Anne Frank House, Amsterdam, Let Me Be Myself enables visitors to identify with the story of Anne Frank through a copy of her diary, poignant photographs and texts, World War Two memorabilia, and a model of the Anne Frank House.

Let Me Be Myself also shows how the story of Anne Frank is still relevant today by highlighting stories from young people and how they deal with discrimination. The exhibition encourages visitors to think about diversity, identity, prejudice, equal rights and democracy.

"To many, Anne Frank represents the 1.5 million children that were killed during the Second World War. Anne was a good writer and expressed her experiences in a way that many could relate to. Unfortunately, her story is still relevant today, as many still experience bullying, racism and their freedom taken from them, often by force," iet Fuijkschot, Executive Manager of Anne Frank Travelling Exhibition Australia said.

Let Me Be Myself – The Story of Anne Frank is a free exhibition and will be on display at the Museum of the Great Southern soon.

Entry to the Museum is by donation.
