They are identified as being fitted with a nose cap which allows the fixing of the Pattern 1888 Sword Bayonet. rather than the usual Pattern 1895 Socket Bayonet. They are thought to be unique among Martini-Enfield variants issued in Australia. The rifles are tentatively named as follows. Group one, M·E Mark I Modified, W.A. Pattern, Group two, M-E Mark 11 Modified, W.A. Pattern and Group three, Unofficial Conversion ME Mark I, Modified, WA Pattern.
