Part of the Riley Family Collection (subset of the ECU Museum of Childhood Collection), these cardboard toy soldiers or ‘flats’ were made in about 1900 by Raphael Tuck and Sons in the United Kingdom. The regiments featured include the Royal Engineers, Gordon Highlanders and the Coldstream Guards. They were played with by the children of the first Anglican Archbishop of Perth, the Rev C O Riley at Bishop’s House Perth.

According to the eldest child Pauline, who lived to be a 101, their remarkable state of preservation may be attributed to her parent’s insistence that the children were very privileged to have such toys and that they should take care of them.
