Marcasite and calcite, Goongewa lead-zinc mine, west Kimberley, WACollection Highlights | Updated 10 months ago Marcasite and calcite, Goongewa mine, Kimberley region, Western Australia. Specimen is 1.35 m long WA Museum In this spectacular specimen, a mat of golden marcasite crystals, punctuated by groups of white calcite crystals, encrusts a large boulder of limestone. The Goongewa mine was remarkable for its solution cavities often filled with well-developed crystalline calcite, marcasite, sphalerite and galena. Hosted by the ancient limestones of a 380 million year old Devonian coral reef system, the Goongewa mineralisation was one of several lead and zinc deposits discovered along the northern margin of the Canning Basin near Fitzroy Crossing. This specimen was skilfully extracted from a large cavern in the roof of the mine workings by the mine foreman, Mr Rod Kneebone. Mineral Collection
