MEDAL, HMAS Galatea, 1867

Round, flat, silver coloured metal, medal inside a flat silver(?) mount with a twisted metal piece attached around outer edge. Mount fastened around medal by four small metal u shaped clasps, leaving a 2mm gap around the medal. Raised bust of Duke of Edinburgh in naval uniform on obverse, marked with ‘H.R.H. DUKE OF EDINBURGH’ in raised lettering around bust. Raised ornamental scroll pattern around border. Raised image of ‘Galatea’ ship with full sails on reverse side, with ‘H.M.S. GALATEA/1867’ marked underneath. ‘TO COMMEMMORATE THE VISIT OF H.R.H. PRINCE ALFRED, DUKE OF EDINBURGH K.C. TO AUSTRALIA’ in raised letters around border. ‘T. STOKES’ and ‘MELBOURNE’ in small raised letters at bottom. Curved loop of metal at top of mount for holding a chain.
