Faille or grosgrain. Purchased Christie's Auction, 20 Nov 79, Lot 9. Pale blue-grey with darker trim, collar and sleeves. High round neck with fold-down, pointed collar in steel blue with pale blue-grey piping. Waist seam at front. Front fastening with 3 rows of wooden(?) buttons and hook at neck. Buttonholes may have been added later as cotton is different. Front shaped with two long darts on each side of front fastening, & extending into skirt. Fitted sleeves in steel blue, piped in same material at shoulder. Inner and outer seam. Extends to contrast cuff, piped and with 2-colour rosette. Opens almost to hem at front. Trimmed with pocket of 7 over-lapping pleats at left side below waist, 2 contrast rows of material and fringing just above hem. The back is unwaisted. Cut in 4 sections with central back seam. 2 central sections widen below waist to possibly go over small bustle? Trimmed with 6 rows of frills centre back in imitation of bustle. Inside hem reinforced with woollen band. Central frilled section mounted on wool. All machine sewn (chain stitch)
