Date: c. 1680
Many generations of the name Yoshimichi worked in Yamashiro and Settsu provinces. This blade, a delightful example of the late 17th century, originates from the 4th generation (1673-88) Kyoto Mishina group, Yamashiro Province. The signature reads: ‘Yoshimichi, Lord of Tamba province [made this]’.
Koshirae
Type: HAMIDASHI
Saya: russet-coloured ribbed lacquer over wood, with sentoku fitting of a musical instrument with gilt inlay. Ribbed kurikata decorated with a cock, kojiri depicting waves and clouds.
Tsuka: russet-coloured ribbed lacquer over wood
Fuchi/kashira: sentoku, decorated with deer and gilt inlay of maple leaves
Menuki: sentoku/gilt, modelled as a sprig of maple across a book. The mekugi is metal with a decorated head.
Tsuba: sentoku, of naga-maru-gata shape. The rim depicts riveted wood and has a copper inlay. The obverse side depicts dragons; the reverse depicts clouds. Signed: ARITOSHI. Dimensions: 3.0 x 5.1 x 0.4 cm
