Short, Unsigned. Maroon Lacquer Scabbard.
Blade Type: TANTO
Mei: mumei
Nagasa: 30.4 cm
Sori: 0.4 cm
Sugata: shinogi tsukuri, iori mune
Nakago: 11.5 cm, one mekugi ana, ubu
Kissaki: chu
Hada: unclear due to abrasion
Hamon: choji midare, with mimi and tobiyaki

Date: 1600-1867

This blade is typical of the tanto blades of the Edo period.

Koshirae
Type: HAMIDASHI
Saya: rust red lacquer over wood, with raised design of fishes, starfish, shell and seaweed in black and red. Three fishes highlighted with gilt.
Tsuka: white same bound with black cotton, buke zukuri type
Fuchi/kashira: plain iron, with gold inlay of waves, birds and nets drying.
Menuki: missing
Tsuba: plain iron, of moko shape, with raised design of mountains, clouds, dwelling and figures, all highlighted with gilt.
Dimensions: 5.0 x 5.7 x 0.5 cm

Overall length: 48.5 cm

Date: 18th-19th century

Although now a little ‘shabby’ from long use, the quality of the fine lacquerwork in the scabbard decoration is still evident.
