This wakizashi blade is dated February 1803. The 1st generation Masashige was not appointed Lord of Kai Province until April 1803, and the signature does not match his style. Although subsequent generations or students occasionally signed blades for preceding generations, this signature does not correspond to any; in fact, the incorrect date and signature style strongly indicate a forgery. The signature reads: ‘Masashige, or Tegarayama school, Lord of Kai (made this)’.
