Date: February 1674

The signature on this wakizashi blade is that of the famous swordsmith Shinkai, of Osaka (1639-82). The quality of the workmanship indicates – as does the accurate signature style – that this blade may well be genuine. The signature reads: ‘Inoue Shinkai (made this)’.

Type: BUKE ZUKURI
Saya: black lacquer over wood, with red/gold dragon and cloud design
Tsuka: white same bound with black ribbon
Fuchi/kashira: patinated copper, nanako background with waves and gilt dragons
Menuki: dull lead/pewter castings of chrysanthemums, possibly replacements
Tsuba: patinated copper, of naga-maru-gata shape, wit
h waves and a gilt dragon who coils and claws appear on the reverse side. Dimensions: 6.6 x 7.2 x 0.3 cm.
