BOOK, Medical Student's Notes - Obstetrics

Dark green, soft leather covered book lettered in gold on the front 'MELBOURNE HOSPITAL STUDENTS CASE TAKING BOOK'. On the spine is sellotaped a rectangle of paper labelled in red 'OBSTETS', this is repeated in ink on the side page edges and 'O' has been inked on the top and bottom page edges. All page edges and inside cover pages are marbled.
Book contains original hand written notes pre 1920, and pasted excerpts from medical books or magazines on the management of pregnancy, some of which appear to have been added up to the mid 1930s (eg. see article on pg.49). Areas include signs of pregnancy pp 1-3; stage of labour pp.17-18, 21-22; chloroform pp 23-4; rupture of membranes to hasten delivery pp.25-26; use of forceps p.170, 173-4, 234; haemorrhage in last three months pp.85-86; caesarian deliveries pp.181-186; puerperal fever pp.189-90; septicaemia p.100; resuscitation of a baby p.219-20.
Contains also (at front) Melbourne Hospital System of Case-Taking (past and family histories, what to look for in a clinical examination, to termination of case - these procedures would have been routine until at least 1920) and some loose articles from medical journals.
