UNIFORM, NURSE'S

H1995.1294

White cottom nurse's uniform consisting of 5 parts: .1 - dress; .2 - apron; .4 - head; .5 - stiffener. Dress (.1) has long sleeves and buttons up the front (9 white removable buttons, spare in pocket). Buttons are held on reverse with safety pins, apparently replacing original split pins. They are composed of plastic, with a metal central pin. Written in ink at rear collar: 'F.L.R. STEVENS'. It has a single flared collar and white cuffs, and a pocket on each side below the waist with a curved opening. Two pleats are positioned on each shoulder, and the waist is darted. The dress would be worn at low calf length. Apron (.2) is of tighter grade cotton, and consists of a small bib with curved neckline and a long pleated panel below the waist extending almost to ground level. Lower hem 12cm wide. The waistband is terminated on one end with a white plastic button and a corresonding button hole; the straps at the rear of the bib are attached to the rear waist band with small, clear press studs. An additional, removable button is safety-pinned to the waist band, and one of the bib straps also has a safety pin in one end.
Belt (.3) is white length of cotton, doubled over; it has two eyelets in each end (one pair smaller to accommodate removable buttons). Written in heavy texta ink (?) on one end: 'G.1.(?)N.'
Scarf (.4) is made of fine, stiffened white cotton, with 4cm hem on each edge. Scarf is square.
Stiffener (.5) consists of white, unhemmed cotton, wrapped around a firm core with an apparently iron-on surface. A strip of velcro, 12.2 x 2.6, was originally adhered to both ends, suggesting that the stiffener was never worn by a nurse but was made and used for display purposes.
