NEEDLEWORK BASKET

Wicker sewing basket, natural colour, with faded light green ribbon for hinges. Decorative metal handle on lid and a clasp of metal with a rotating fastener on the front of the basket. It is lined with bronze coloured satin, the lid padded to take pins, needles etc. Contents of the basket are many and varied - Inventory follows: 1 x folder of assorted needles for `sewing' & `artwork' 24 x assorted reels of thread, mostly `Coats' brand 1 x square cardboard box with a holly decoration on the lid containing buttons, buckles, collar stays, wooden beads, hairpins, gold safety pins, a silver 1926 threepenny piece, a `Liberal Loan 1942 subscribers' badge, a scarab beetle brooch, costume jewellery, A `Winston Churchill' pin, and 2 x `V' for Victory pins. 4 x pkts needles 1 x fabric tape measure 3 x cards buttons 2 x lengths of red/white/blue striped ribbon 1 x small spray of red fabric roses 1 x blue/white striped fabric drawstring bag of hooks & eyes 1 x cash register receipt, Boans, Jun 11th for 11d. 3 x green/red/gold Christmas parcel stickers 1 x card of snap fasteners 1 x green glass eyebath with broken base 1 x box `Falcon' superior quality toilet pins 1 x white shoelace 2 x spectacle lenses, each in a packet marked `OAC' 1 x small brass thimble 1 x roll of `Sew & Sew' cotton tape 1 x small bent wire corkscrew 1 x small roll of stiffened tape 1 x suspender on pink elastic 2 x bunches assorted safety pins 1 x bunch pink embroidery silk 5 x cards of darning thread 2 x lengths of pearl & crystal bead work 2 x beaded milk jug covers (bad condition) 1 x cotton reel with black satin ribbon wound on to it 1 x reel of black silk fine braid 1 x paper of pins 1 x ivory spool of thread 1 x elastic threader Sewing basket belonged to Dora Firnstone since she was a child. Dora did her nurses training in the north of England before migrating to Australia. Dora nursed at Fairbridge. Married Frederick Firnstone, Merchant Navy. They worked a farm outside Sydney.
