BATHING COSTUME, 1950s

H1990.99

One piece cotton bathers in a red and white cotton fabric lined with white knitted cotton. The back is completely shirred, and the pattern forms increasingly pointy "V" shapes down the back. There are two buttons on the top of the back for attaching the straps. The straps are long and have holes cut into them so they can either cross over or be buttoned straight onto the same side. The front of the bathers is gathered at the side and centre of the breasts. This attaches to two bands which run up the centre of the breasts and across the top on each side. The straps attach to the band level with the centre of each breast. Elastic thread has been stitched in two lines just each side of the centre front seam, from the waist to the crutch. The pattern on the front of the bathers is the same downward sloping "V" but it does not curve inwards as the back does.
