On the front of the three envelopes at the centre top is the following underlined print: "ON HER MAJESTY'S SERVICE". On the back of all three envelopes on the flap is an embossed circle which has within it the British Royal Coat of Arms. Each individual envelope has further print as follows. a. On the front of the envelope there is a handwritten note in black ink which has faded. It is as follows: "Coins of the Realm". The note is underlined. On the left of the note are three initials that are handwritten in blue ink. They are: "M.C.J.". On the back of the envelope there is a very faint imprint of these initials in blue ink. b. A handwritten note appears on the front of the envelope as follows: "Coins of the Realm. To be placed in / the Foundation Stone of the Geraldton / Public Buildings ".Some of the words are underlined. The note is written in black ink which has faded. c. The following handwritten underlined note appears on the front of the envelope: "Specimen Postage Stamps and Postcards". At the back of the envelope is the maker's name which is embossed on an edge of the envelope. The embossed print is as follows: "WILLIAM DETMOLD LTD, FREMANTLE". The envelopes were part of the contents of a time capsule that was placed beneath the foundation stone of the Geraldton Courthouse in 1897. Numerous other items were found in the capsule including maps, newspapers and reports. The envelopes contained stamps, coins and postcards. These were removed from the envelopes.
