215 page, soft-covered Mining Handbook. The cover of the handbook is made from rough textured paper. On the front of the book in faded black print are the details of the book. At the top is the books title which is as follows: "MINING HANDBOOK / TO THE COLONY OF / WESTERN AUSTRALIA". Below this in small print is a sentence describing whom the book is aimed at, ie. Prospectors and Strangers to the Colony. The author's name appears below this: "HARRY P. WOODWARD", followed by a description of his qualifications in small print and "GOVERNMENT GEOLOGIST" in bold print. The additional information below this is the acknowledgement of the Minister of Mines, the edition copyright (2nd), where and by whom the book was printed and the year it was printed (1895). The contents of the handbook cover a wide range of topics that include: description of the country, Geology, Mineralogy, Metallic Minerals, Non-Metallic Minerals, History of Mineral Resources Goldfields, Information for Prospectors, a Glossary of Scientific and Mining terms and Shipping, Railway, Postal and Telegraph Services. There are also numerous diagrams and fold out maps in the handbook. The handbook was found in a time capsule that was placed beneath the foundation stone of the Geraldton Courthouse in 1897.
