MEDAL, Clarke Gold, Royal Humane Society, with Certificate

[.a] medal; gold with the impression if a robed woman bestowing a laurel wreath on the head of a kneeling youth on the obverse and the words "VIRTUTE / PARATUM". What appears to be the Southern Cross appears above the head of the youth and there is foliage at ground level. Beneath the figures, "G. TURNER D. J. HOGARTH. M(?)." At the top of the mounting there is a pin. The ribbon is maroon in colour edged on either side by a white band. Directly supporting the medallion is a rectangular metal bar with "CLARKE MEDAL". Around the circumference, "THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF AUSTRALASIA / INSTD. A.D. 1874" appears, and across the centre AWARDED / TO / CHARLES J. HICKS / 7-11-1897".
[.b] certificate; An embellished citation with a decorative border accompanying the medal which reads "THE ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY / OF AUSTRALASIA / INSTITUTED 1874 / UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF / HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN / AND / THEIR EXCELLENCIES THE GOVERNORS / OF ALL / THE AUSTRALASIAN COLONIES / AND / FIJI. / PRESIDENT / GEORGE LUSH ESQR. / VICE PRESIDENTS / JOHN W. EGGLESTON ESQR. / AND / THE RIGHT WORSHIPFUL THE MAYORS / OF THE / CAPITAL CITIES / OF / AUSTRALASIA. / AT A GENERAL COURT OF DIRECTORS HOLDEN AT THE OFFICES OF THE SOCIETY / MELBOURNE ON THE NINETEENTH DAY OF APRIL 1899 / IT WAS RESOLVED THAT THE COURAGE AND HUMANITY DISPLAYED BY / CHARLES J. HICKS / OF KANOWNA, WEST. AUSTRALIA, A MINER AGED 28 YEARS IN RESCUING / EDWARD ALFRED HOLE OF KANOWNA, A MINER, AGED 32 YEARS, FROM DEATH BY / A DYNAMITE EXPLOSION IN A MINE AT KANOWNA ON THE 7TH NOVEMBER 1898 / CALL FOR THE ADMIRATION OF THIS COURT AND JUSTLY ENTITLES HIM / TO THE CLARKE GOLD MEDAL OF THIS SOCIETY WHICH IS HEREBY AWARDED / ........ SECRETARY ... G. LUSH PRESIDENT". There is a decorative heading incorporating the obverse and reverse aspects of the society's medal and the Crown.
[.c] document folder; black with a 2.9cm pouch, open at one end, to hold the citation. Gold lettering on the front reads "THE ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY / OF AUSTRALASIA". Beneath this is a slit with a shred of royal blue ribbon lining through which a ribbon was probably threaded.
