CANTEEN,Water

H1989.927

Water canteen, blue enamel and almost elliptical in shape with an inner curve so that the container sits comfortably against the body. Item has a slightly convex recessed base with the faintly discernible outline of a white, Defence Forces arrow head on it. The round neck of the bottle protrudes from a completely convex top or shoulder and is sealed by a cork with a metal cap and ring. The ring still has a knot of string attached. Water bottles such as this were used by British Empire and Commonwealth armies from 1903 to the 1950s. There were minor variations in shape due to different manufacturers and dates of production. Relics recovered from Gallipoli indicate that this canteen was the type used by the Australian Imperial Force in 1915. It would have been used by a soldier to carry his personal drinking water and was part of his personal equipment. This particular canteen was initially issued by the Australian government and was later recovered from a Fremantle scrap merchant.
