CORKSCREW, Bench

H1989.913

Has screw attachment at RH side, centre has decorative barrel covering corkscrew mechanism inside, base of barrel has spring loaded clamp handle to hold neck of bottle, left hand side has curved metal & wooden handle. This moves in both clockwise and anti-clockwise direction; clockwise movement removes cork, anti-clockwise movement returns lever to resting position for next removal. A similar corkscrew is depicted in the 1907 Army & NAvy Stores Catalogue, and reads; "For use in Clubs, Hotels, Canteens, &c." : obviously unlikely to be for domestic use.
