HOT CLIP PERMING MACHINE

H1986.287

Vertical type "JUNIOR HAIR WAVER MODEL C No. 326 / VOLTS 240 / WATTS 400 / SENN / MAKER / ADELAIDE". Castor wheeled green enamelled steel tripod stand supporting on vertical chromed central pole a nine sided, compartmentalized green enamelled tray half way up its length, above which is the main heating mechanism. This consists of a chromed hectagonal switch box to which are fixed at the side, three bakelite switches. These control the heating of six vertical poles which project vertically from the top of the switch box. These are capped by a dodecahedronal shaped chromed cap. Clipped to the vertical heating rods are numerous nickel and bakelite handled heating clips. Item purchased with June Travers or Nan Samon's Perth salons in 1947 or 48. Probably used in these stores about 1940s. Ken McLaughlin chose not to use this machine, giving preference to his own horizontal hot clip machines. The machine was never used by him, but was kept in storage until the time of donation. Manufactured by "SENN" of Adelaide. The machine was used in a perming process by which strands of hair were pulled through a hole in a rubber backed felt pad. The pad kept the toxic chemicals used in the perming process off the scalp. The strand of hair was then wrapped around a metal clip roller ( see H86/244b for example) and coated with perming chemical. A hot clip was then clamped over the roll to set the hair. These clips were either for small rolls or large depending on how much hair had been curled around the roll.
