SHOES, BABY'S

CH1980.107

Brown leather. Rounded toe, with small ribbon rosette. Brown cloth ankle strap with glass button. Leather sole. All hand sewn. May be early to mid C19th because of rounded toe, but style may have been standard throughout the century. See illustration in Ewing (see below), although this pair is han made.

Additional information : supplied by June Swann, world authority on historic shoes visiting from UK, during her inspection of shoe collection 18th October 1993.
'Surface flaking. Girls' brown leather ankle-strap shoes. Probably sheep skin - not a good leather. Round toe; no heel. Appears unworn, apart from upper, which looks creased. Square throat; rose made from cloth on top. c. 1860s.
