(a) Front green and cream embroidered in diamond pattern of fawn background. Probably hand embroidery. 7 buttons dark green glass with metal surrounds (removed and placed in bag attached). 4 slanted pockets. Back and lining cream glazed cotton. Strap and metal buckle at back. Button holes in dark green thread, hand-made. One vertical button-hole for catch chain to pass through. In blue ink on shoulder 'D. SPEDDING-SMITH'.
(b) Front black and cream embroidered, probably by hand on lighter cream ground. Diagonal pattern. 7 round black buttons, white stripe. Black button holes, hand worked, and vertical button hole for watch chain. 4 slanking pockets. 2 straps and buckle at back. Back and lining cream glazed cotton.
No. of pockets, high buttoning and 'U' opening at waist indicate date circa 1890's 1900's, probably the latter. Ref. A.M. Buck, 'Victorian Costume and Costume Accessories, 1961, pp. 188-91 and Mansfield and Cunnington, 'Handbook of English Costume in 20th Century', 1973, pp. 260-1.
