In this workshop, students delve into the world of taxonomy to further their understanding of the classification of organisms.

Using practical hands-on activities, students learn and apply the techniques of taxonomists, by creating and naming their own unique organism using scientific language.

Students will:

  • Explore classification through examples in the Wild Life gallery
  • Discover the scientific process for naming species
  • Solve a classification challenge
  • Create and name their own organism using digital devices (year 7)
  • Discuss the scientific conventions of naming species
  • Apply scientific method to the naming of a new species
  • Learn about the Western Australian Museum’s work in identifying and naming new organisms
