Scinema: OceansSpecial Event | Updated 1 decade ago Upstream to Downstream (In Our Bloodstreams) 2010 - This environmental short is one of a series of eerie public service style announcements I make as a Maine ecological art activist on behalf of water quality, water availability, and water rights. The concept of Upstream to Downstream (In Our Bloodstreams) is the layering and accumulation of toxins our worldwide cultures dump into the environment, most of it travelling into our oceans - but then what goes around, comes around creating toxic 'body burden's and endangering our world's ocean lifeblood -- hence the symbolization of the floating body over flowing rivers, factory pollutions, agricultural pollutions, and accumulations of plastics and DNA endocrine disruptors such as Bisphenol A. The purpose of this work is to raise awareness of a need for new systems and goals in support of sustainability issues. It is a Documentary based in and inspired by scientific water quality research, but also of the Experimental genre employing quite a few green screen effects and layered sound -- however I consider it's main worth as an ecological statement. It was filmed primarily on the coasts of Maine, Florida, Georgia, and California in the United States. They settled near the esteros (canals) surrounding the Pasig River, one of the largest bodies of water in the metro. However, they throw their wastes direct to these canals, which in turn pollute both the canal and all the bodies of water connected to it as the current sweeps off the all these into the river. The film revolves on the insights of the people who live near the river and the people who are helping out clean the river and relocate them. Thirty-three volunteer researchers, scientists and sailors participated in this five-week long journey to the Sargasso Sea, east of Bermuda. Sailing on a 135-tall ship, the film closely follows four of the researchers as they collect, count, and archive the plastic they encounter. Along the way, the film examines the history of plastics, the adverse effects it is causing in the ocean, and possible solutions to this problem. Over the last five years, ocean gyres have been hot environmental news stories, primarily focused on the Pacific Ocean gyre, also know as the 'Great Pacific Garbage Patch.' Into the Gyre follows one of the first research expeditions to study the North Atlantic gyre. The primary source of Atlantic plastic pollution is the eastern United States, making this story of particular importance to American audiences. The expedition -- and the film -- provides the first accurate depictions of the science, collection and study of plastic pollution in the open ocean. From the wooded mountain top to the mangrove and into the sea, we came across dedicated men, women and children, turtles and sea cucumbers, right down to the vibrant coral reefs shimmering below the turquoise water. The lagoon of Mayotte is a cradle of hope: to build a future that will be environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.
