For National Science Week, the Western Australian Museum – Albany and partners are holding a range of events and programs to mark this annual celebration of science in Australia.

Tuesday Curatorial: “Such variety of plants, entirely new to me”

10.30am - 12.00pm, Tuesday 6 August 2013

On 1 April 1791, Vancouver’s ship Discovery left England bound for Australia. When exploring King George Sound the ship’s naturalist and surgeon Archibald Menzies collected and named many varieties of plants endemic to this region recording his observations as he went.
Join local historian Geoff Byrne as he discusses this fascinating topic.

Great Southern, Great Science Symposium

The Great Southern Science Council with the Western Australia Chief Scientist, the WA Museum (Albany), and The University of Western Australia’s Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management host an annual conference in Albany to showcase the excellent science that is taking place in the Great Southern and South Coast. This focus of this year’s presentations relate to Nationally significant work that is important and relevant for the Great Southern Local scientists and professional’s research and development work in the Great Southern. The Symposium is aimed at scientists, professionals, students and members of the community with an interest in research and teaching science for the South Coast and Great Southern.

Miniscule Matters: Tiny Space, Hidden Places

11.00am – 2.00pm daily 8 - 20 August 2013

This free community project will highlight the essential role that insects play in our ecosystems and the indirect impact insects have on our daily lives, increasing understanding of the need for insect habitats within the urban landscape. WA Museum Albany staff and volunteers will be located in shopping centres, café areas and the main street inviting members of the community to create insect ‘hotels’ by constructing small compartmental habitats out of various materials for a range of insects. As each compartment is finished it will be placed in a living insect habitat ‘wall’ as part of a public garden display.

Something Fishy! - Young Naturalists Club

With Tahryn Thompson, Dept Fisheries This one is very smelly and icky! Not for the faint hearted! Learn the parts of a fish that you have probably never considered. How do we know who old a fish is? Look at his ear of course!

Tuesday Curatorial: GSDC Natural Resource Management Medallists - Field Day

10.30am – 12.30pm, Tuesday 13 August 2013

The GSDC’s two most recent Excellence in Natural Resource Management Medallists will be discussing and demonstrating their work.
John Moore Department of Agriculture and Food scientist, awarded for his commitment to and innovation in environmental, agricultural and horticultural weed control and Dr Geoff Woodall, awarded for his contribution to the understanding that the region’s native plants included many species with commercial potential.
