National Science Week @ Albany 2013Special Event | Updated 1 decade ago National Science Week 2013 For National Science Week, the Western Australian Museum – Albany and partners are holding a range of events and programs to mark this annual celebration of science in Australia. Tuesday Curatorial: “Such variety of plants, entirely new to me” 10.30am - 12.00pm, Tuesday 6 August 2013 On 1 April 1791, Vancouver’s ship Discovery left England bound for Australia. When exploring King George Sound the ship’s naturalist and surgeon Archibald Menzies collected and named many varieties of plants endemic to this region recording his observations as he went. Join local historian Geoff Byrne as he discusses this fascinating topic. This focus of this year’s presentations relate to Nationally significant work that is important and relevant for the Great Southern Local scientists and professional’s research and development work in the Great Southern. The Symposium is aimed at scientists, professionals, students and members of the community with an interest in research and teaching science for the South Coast and Great Southern. WA Museum Albany staff and volunteers will be located in shopping centres, café areas and the main street inviting members of the community to create insect ‘hotels’ by constructing small compartmental habitats out of various materials for a range of insects. As each compartment is finished it will be placed in a living insect habitat ‘wall’ as part of a public garden display.
