July 5th, 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the death of John Curtin, the Prime Minister who led Australia through most of World War II. A passionate socialist from a poor Irish family, Curtin fought his own battles against depression and anxiety before taking the helm of Australia during its darkest hour. Pilloried for introducing conscription – against which he had campaigned in the previous war – and for his ‘turn to America’ in spite of Australia’s traditional British allegiance, Curtin emerges in retrospect as an innovator and visionary who unified his people, campaigned for social reform and helped forge our independent national identity.
