Webinar - Migration Stories Online

Wed 24 Jun 2020

Fishermans Memorial, Fishing Boat Harbour, Fremantle

Date: Wednesday 24 June 2020
Time: 12.00pm - 12.45pm
Cost: Free
Where: online
For: Primary School Teachers

Hosted by the Association of Independent Schools WA (AISWA) and presented by the WA Maritime Museum and State Library of WA Education teams, this free lunchtime webinar will explore online tools and resources to engage students with stories of migration to WA, and simple ways to remotely explore Northbridge and Fremantle to discover the contributions of migrants to our community.

The most engaging classroom inquiries begin with curiosity and wonderings that often take us wandering outside the classroom to explore, connect with ‘place’, find answers, ask more questions, and learn from experts. Before we venture out, teachers will often ask their students, Who can we ask? Where can we go? In these challenging times with restrictions to our favourite excursion venues, this webinar series will take you to some of our most popular places with online resources, mini-lessons, and virtual experiences to bring the experts into your classroom.

The webinar is free, but you will need to register your attendance on the AISWA website to receive the live webinar link and the recording after the event (you will be required to create a login).

Immigration Stories (Year 6)

Stephen and Family leaving England

In 1968, Stephen and his family stood on the deck of the Fairstar waving and throwing streamers as they bade farewell to England.

The WA Maritime Museum is the perfect location to bring Year 6 students as a stimulus to explore the stories of people who migrated to Australia. The Museum is located on Victoria Quay in historic Fremantle where many people disembarked ships to start the Australian part of their migration story.

Immigration Stories is a new two-part 120 minute curriculum-linked package that immerses your students throughout our galleries. It assists teachers of Year 6 students with the following HASS focus questions:

  • Why did they migrate to Australia and what were their stories and challenges? (ACHASSK136)
  • How did they contribute to Australian society? (ACHASSK137)
