    Arachnid and Myriapod Collection

    The Museum’s Arachnid and Myriapods contains representatives of a wide variety of terrestrial arthropods, excluding insects and crustaceans, and other phyla. The majority are arachnids (spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, etc.) and myriapods (millipedes and centipedes, etc.) with some smaller groups such as pycnogonids (sea spiders), horseshoe crabs, tardigrades (water bears) and onychophorans (velvet worms). The collection is chiefly from Western Australia but includes specimens from other Australian regions and elsewhere in the world.

    Entomology (Insect) Collection

    This collection contains representatives of all kinds of insects, chiefly from Western Australia, but including specimens from other Australian states and elsewhere in the world. Specimens are dried and pinned, preserved in ethanol, or slide-mounted. This collection serves primarily as a reference and research collection rather than for display.

    Mammalogy (Mammals) Collection

    This collection contains representatives of both terrestial and aquatic mammals, chiefly from Western Australia, but including specimens from other Australian regions and elsewhere in the world - particularly from southeast Asia. This collection serves as a reference collection, a research collection, and also for display in the Museum's exhibitions.

    Ornithology (Birds) Collection

    The Museum's Ornithology Collection contains eggs, nests, skeletons, taxidermy, alcohol preserved birds and also tissue used for genetic analysis. The bird specimens are sourced from all over Western Australia as well as Christmas Island and Indonesia. This collection also contains a reference collection of specimens from around Australia and the world.

    Maritime history oral histories

    The Maritime History department focuses on Western Australian maritime history within the context of the Indian Ocean. The Maritime History department’s Oral History Collection holds over two hundred interviews with people who are directly associated with the department’s collections, or who are associated with a specific area of research undertaken for publication or exhibitions.

    Maritime History staff mostly conduct these interviews, however, sometimes volunteers from relevant fields perform the interviews on behalf of the Museum.

    Marine engine, science and technology collection

    The Marine Engine, Science and Technology Collection comprises of marine steam machinery, pumps and generators used on ships that operated off Western Australia’s coast.

    The collection includes combustion engines made in Western Australia, and Australian engines with a strong Western Australian provenance. The Maritime History department also collects imported marine engines that have a strong Western Australian marine history or represent major trends in the history and development of marine engineering in this State.

    The Maritime History Art Collection comprises of paintings, etchings, watercolours and other art works representing maritime scenes and subjects, particularly ship portraits, that relate to Western Australian maritime history, or Western Australian maritime history in the context of the Indian Ocean.
