PLANE, Smoothing
H1989.210
This plane does not bear the Stanley trade mark and may be a copy, but it appears identical to the Stanley's Adjustable described in Salaman. It is a Smooth size plane, 9 inches long and has a 2 1/8 inch cutting iron. The handle is metal and marked QPC and appears newer than the rest of the plane. The sole is mild steel bent up to form the side plates. There is a separate casting riveted inside the sole to which the hand and front knob and frog are screwed. It has an earlier type of gun-metal lever cap with a knurled screw instead of a spring cam. The cutter is raised up and down by a two pronged lever which is quicker than the screw of the original Bailey-Stanley pattern but not capable of such fine adjustment. Although the planes were about 10% cheaper the design was withdrawn about 1910.
