Stewart Spiers, Ayr, scotland (1910-1920)': 'These handsome and still sought-after planes...The stock took the form of a steel box or channel with rosewood core....the mild steel sole plates and side plates were frequently dovetailed together in a highly ingenious manner.....On face of core: 'SPIERS/ AYR/30' on end of sole plate: 'DOVETAILED' - 'RIDGEWAY' impressed r.h.s. and l.h.s. Core. 'W.J. RIDGWAY' hand-engraved. RHS side plate. On wedge & blade : 'EST 1840 / STEWART SPIERS/ AYR SCOTLAND' 'Steward Spiers/ REGD TRADE MARK'.
