BEER LABELS ‘EMU/EXPORT’

1-3] Three medium red white and black paper ‘EMU/ EXPORT’ labels. A narrow top section is white background with a line drawing of the brewery, sitting in front of the drawing is a yellow circle with a lack border containing a silhouette of an emu. The larger bottom section is red background ‘EMU/EXPORT/ BREWED LOCALLY FROM NATURAL PRODUCTS/ 375ML/ PRODUCT OF AUSTRALIA’. Written vertically down left side ‘BEER/ 4.9% ALC/VOL/ APPROX 15G ALC/BOTTLE’. Written vertically down right side ‘THE SWAN BREWERY COMPANY LIMITED/ 25 BAILE ROAD CANNING VALE WA 6155/ [made in WA logo]’. Down the right side is a thick black stripe which contains a ‘DrinkSafe’ logo and barcode. [2] has 9 notches cut out of the left side and [3] has 7 of the same.

[4] One label, same design as above but without black stripe on the right and slightly different wording. Down the centre is the same, to the left is ‘[DrinkSafe logo]/ BEER/ 4.9% ALC.VOL/ APPROZ 15G ALC/BOTTLE/ [recycle symbol]’. Down right side is ‘THE SWAN BREWERY COMPANY LIMITED/ 25 BAILE ROAD CANNING VALE WA 6155/ [made in WA logo]/ 5C DEPOSIT IN S.A./ REFUND AT CONATINER COLLECTION DEPOTS’.

[5] One medium rectangular red, white and yellow paper ‘EMU/ EXPORT’ label. Red and yellow stripe along the top and bottom edges. Top 1/3 is white background with a line drawing of the brewery inside a yellow semi-circle background. In front of the drawing is a yellow circle with black border containing a drawing of an emu. Below this is ‘SINCE 1923/ EMU/ EXPORT/ 375ML’. vertically down the left side is a ‘DrinkSafe’ logo, ‘Recycle’ symbol, barcode and ‘Made in W.A.’ symbol. Vertically down the right side is ‘BEER/ 4.9% ALC/VOL APPROX 1.5 STANDARD DRINKS/ PRODUCT OF AUSTRALIA/ THE SWAN BREWERY COMPANY PTY LIMITED/ 25 BAILE ROAD CANNING VALE WA 6155’. On the reverse in pencil is ‘JUNE 1997/ OFF BOTTLE’. Label is slightly wrinkled with a fold along the left edge.

[6-8] Three rectangular paper red white and yellow paper ‘EMU/ EXPORT’ labels. Red black and gold stripe running across the top and bottom edge. Top 1/3 is a white background with central design of a gold sunburst containing an emu drawing with ‘SINCE/ 1923’ on either side. On the far left in the white sections is the small ‘Made in WA’ logo. The bottom 2/3 is a red background. ‘EMU/ EXPORT’ above a line drawing of the brewery with ‘BREWED IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA/ 375ML’ to the left (vertically) is a barcode and ‘4.9% ALC/VOL APPROX./ 1.5 STANDARD DRINKS/ THE SWAN BREWERY COMPANY/ PTY LIMITED 25 BAILE ROAD/ CANNING VALE WA 6155’ and to the right is ‘[‘DrinkSafe’ logo]/ BEER BREWED & BOTTLED IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA’.

[9-11] Three large labels, exactly the same as above but with some text differences. On the left vertical is different ‘4.9% ALC/VOL APPROX 2.9 STANDARD DRINKS/ THE SWAN BREWERY COMPANY PTY LIMITED/ 25 BAILE ROAD CANNING VALE WA 6155’. And fluid measurement is ‘750ML’.

[12-13] Two medium rectangular (landscape) black red white and yellow paper ‘EMU/ EXPORT’ labels. There’s a thin red and yellow stripe across the top and bottom, and a thick black stripe down the left side. The top 1/3 is a white background with a line drawing of the brewery site in the centre. In front of the drawing, but dropped down a little is a yellow circle with a silhouette of an emu. The bottom 2/3 of the label is a red background ‘EMU/ EXPORT/ 375ML/ [made in WA logo]’. In the black section to the left is the ‘DrinkSafe’ logo, ‘Recycle’ symbol and a barcode. Written down the same side, but in the red section is ‘THE SWAN BREWERY COMPANY PTY LIMITED/ 25 BAILE ROAD, CANNING VALE, W.A. 6155’. Printed down the right side is ‘BEER/ 4.9% ALC/VOL APPROX 15G ALC/BOTTLE/ PRODUCT OF AUSTRALIA’.

[14] One large rectangular black red and white paper ‘Emu/ Export’ label. Same design as above but a larger label. Liquid measurement is ‘750ML’ and next to this at the bottom, in the centre is ’40 YEARS/ SINCE 1954’. To the right is slightly different wording ‘BEER/ 4.9% ALC/VOL APPROX 30G ALC/BOTTLE/ PRODUCT OF AUSTRALIA’.

[15-17] Three medium rectangular (landscape) red yellow and white paper ‘EMU/EXPORT’ labels. Red, silver and yellow stripes across top and bottom edges. White background with ‘EMU/EXPORT LAGER’ and a silver image of the brewery buildings inside a semicircle of yellow and silver. Below this is the red and silver stripes with a central circle of yellow which has an emu silhouette inside. ‘345ML/ 5% ALC/VOL’ is written on either side. In the white section, down the right side is ‘THE SWAN BREWERY COMPANY LTD.,/ 25 BAILE ROAD, CANNING VALE, W.A. 6155/ PRODUCT OF AUSTRALIA’.

[18-20] Larger portrait version of the label above. All same info and design except liquid measurement is ‘750ML’.

[21-23] Three small square red white and yellow, paper ‘EMU/ EXPORT’ labels. Red and yellow border around whole label, top 2/3 is white and the bottom 1/3 is yellow and red. The white sections has ‘EMU/ EXPORT LAGER’ in an arch above a line drawing of the brewery. The yellow strip has a central circle with a red border containing a silhouette of an emu. On either side in the yellow is ‘BREWED AND/ BOTTLED BY’ and in the red at the bottom is ‘THE SWAN BREWERY CO. LTD/ PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA/ 375ML 5.0% ALC/VOL.

[24-26] Three same as above, but slightly larger, rectangular labels. Liquid measurement is ‘370ML’ and the alcohol volume info is missing. Slightly darker colours used.

[27] Same as [24-26] but label is octagonal shaped. All same including liquid measurement and colour scheme.

[28-30] Three large rectangular (portrait) red yellow and white paper ‘EMU/ EXPORT’ paper labels. Red and yellow (mustard?) border around whole label. ‘EMU/ EXPORT LAGER’ in arch above line drawing of brewery all in white background. Yellow and white striped semi-circle below contains ‘BREWED AND BOTTLED BY/ THE SWAN BREWERY CO. LTD.’ Inside a red circle is an emu silhouette, on a red background at the base is ‘AT/ PERTH’ on one side if the circle and ‘WESTERN AUSTRALIA’ on the other side. Directly beneath the circle is ‘740ML’.

[31-33] Three small portrait rectangular labels, same design as above but smaller, but with gold ‘EMU/ EXPORT LAGER’ instead of yellow. Not on gloss paper, slightly duller colours used. Missing liquid measurement and has ‘AT/ PERTH/ WEST/ AUSTRALIA’. In border at the very bottom is ‘SANDS & MCDOUGALL PTY LTD PERTH’.

[34-36] Three large portrait labels, same design as above with the duller, more yellowed colours. No gold this time, has no fluid measurement but does have ‘Sands etc’. Addition at the very top above ‘EMU’ is ‘H.M. FORCES ONLY’. On gloss paper.

[37] One large rectangular (landscape) brown red and yellow paper ‘EMU/ EXPORT’ label. Central area is a beige background, with a thick brown strip down either side and a further black strip down the left. Main section has ‘EMU/ EXPORT LAGER’ above a line drawing of the brewery. Beneath that is ‘LIMITED EDITION RELEASE’ in an arc. Below the arc is a red circle containing a drawing of an emu. Bottom bit is red and yellow stripe. In the brown section to the right (vertically) is ‘BEER/ 4.9% ALC/VOL APPROX 30 GRAMS ALC/BOTTLE/ PRODUCT OF AUSTRALIA’ and in the brown section to the left is ‘THE SWAN BREWERY COMPANY LIMITED/ 25 BAILE ROAD, CANNING VALE, W.A. 6155/ 750ML’. In the black section to the far left is the ‘DrinkSafe’ logo, ‘Recycle’ logo and a barcode.
