Dress uniform of Victorian Horse Artillery. (a) Jacket: As Royal Artillery Officer's full dress regulations 1900 excepting embroidered grenade on collar (not included) and shoulder cords - of double row of braid not plated braid. Navy blue with gold braid and red collar. Sergeant's Stripes in gold on red on right- hand sleeve with gold badge of cannon (embroidered) above. Fourteen front buttons: (crown) / (garter) with "AUT PACE AUT BELLO" and Southern Cross in centre. (b) Trousers - as Royal Artillery above. Navy blue with 4.4 cm wide red stripe. (c) Field cap. Navy blue with yellow braid and top and flaps. Black leather strap with "W. Paterson / 225" in black ink. (d) Shoulder cord, yellow braid, probably originally gold. Letter from Peter Burness, Curator of Relics, Australian War Memorial on file, 18 Jul6 1978 includes information on uniform and regiment. Victorian Horse Artillery established by Sir William J. Clarke in December 1884. In 1890 it became part of the Field Artillery Brigade which was sent to England by Sir William in 1893 to take part in military competitions. Acted as escort, on behalf of the Colony of Victoria, at the wedding of the Duke of York, later King George V. Disbanded 1897.
