FLOUR BALANCE, 1000 mg

H1997.32

Cast metal balance enamelled speckled pale green. Head of balance is semi-circular, 6.5cm thick, with a clear plastic window at the top of the front surface framing a white dial inscribed in black with 2mg divisions to a maximum of 1000mg. A central knob on the head of the balance allows for adjustment of the dial. The knob is inscribed 'ASE', with an image of scales. Three other labels are also attached to the head of the balance:
1. In red on silver 'UDY ANALYZER COMPANY/ Pullman, Washington - U.S.A.'
2. In blue on silver 'SELBYS/ SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS/ LABORATORY APPARATUS/ CHEMICALS/ MELBOURNE.SYDNEY.BRISBANE.PERTH.ADELAIDE'.
3. In blue and red on brass (?): 'AUGUST/ SAUTER/ N.Y. INC./ N.Y.C. USA.' A knob below the latter sign is inscribed 'MADE IN GERMANY'.
On each side of the head of the balance is a swinging door. One door opens to reveal a delicate, thin aluminium cup for placing flour to be weighed; the other reveals an arm onto which weights can be hung.
The base of the balance is circular, with three more prominant legs for stability. At the front of the base, a draw opens to reveal a pair of plastic-tipped metal tweezers (.2) and a small round metal contianer with lid (.3) (attached to base of drawer) containing a weight stamped '1000', a hook, a length of thin wire and a small piece of thin metal.
Underside inscribed '3245/ MADE IN GERMANY'.
