Wooden box with removable lid containing a flour colour grader. The grade has a light green enamelled face, with four black knobs and a dial with gradings from -5 to 18. The face is inscribed 'KENT JONES & MARTIN/ FLOUR COLOUR GRADER SERIES 2/ DISTRIBUTED BY/ HENRY SIMON LTD/ STOCKPORT ENGLAND/ MADE IN ENGLAND/ TYPE 5039A/ NO 120.989'. The number '4.8' has been written in texta on front - almost worn away.
A handle on the face of the grader is pulled up to reveal a narrow metal tray containing a cream coloured disk (for colour comparison) and a second disk, empty, into which the sample of flour would be placed for testing.
Two doors on the sides of the box open to reveal the internal mechanism of the grader, but their purpose is unclear.
The box lid (.2) contains a small piece of printed paper attached to the inside with a piece of perspex. The paper is a test certificate, printed and signed by hand, and dated 14.11.1955. It notes that the grader operates on 240 volts A.C., with an ultimate internal standard of 7.9 units.
A manufacturer's plaque is also attached to the inside of the lid.
