SPURS, Light Horse

H1994.81

Cavalry spurs. Metal 'open Y' shaped implement which fits onto the heel of a riding boot. The rowel, usually a many pointed starshaped dise, fits into a slot in the extended neck of the spur. The spur proper is held onto the boot by two leather straps; one is fixed to the spur and passes under the instep, the other has a buckle and passes over the top of the foot. This upper strap has a shield shaped sheet of leather attached. The leather appears not to be marked in any way. The metal spurs are marked on the inside of the hell piece 'WILLIAMS/ & CO/ 1915'.
They are marked respectively , on the top of the neck;
H.1994.81.1 'BROAD ARROW/ M' Silver coin rowel dated 1913.
H.1994.81.2 'BROAD ARROW/ ?' Silver coin rowel dated 1917.
The rowels are made of fifty centine French coins.
