MESS TIN, Light Horse
H1993.426
This mess tin is circular with rounded bottom and lid (like a bowl). It has a wire handle which folds inside the bowl for economy of space. It can be folded out to allow cooking like a frypan. The domed lid has two slots on the rim to allow the wire handle to protrude when it is folded out and the trooper requires the lid to be on his mess tin as he cooks. The lid and bowl have metal loops attached to allow a leather strap to be passed through and buckled to hold both halves together when not in use, attached to the rifle bucket on the saddle. This specimen is marked inside the bowl (in a circle) 'SIDDONS/ WOOLWICH?' (in centre) '1918' (faint)./ '57/ broad arrow'.
