BED, Pensioner Guard

H1990.69

Made entirely of hand worked iron. The head and foot of the bed are as follows:
Head is 'H' frame, with top of 'H' covered in with thin sheeting rivetted to uprights.
Foot is same as head but does not have two uprights as in 'H', or the attached sheeting. It is an inverted 'U'.
The head and foot frames have two holes each, one on each side to accept the threaded 'male' ends of the two siderails of the bed proper. These threaded ends pass through the head/foot ends and are securely locked in place by large nuts. The bed has five iron cross members which mortice/ tenon into the two side rails. They are in turn overlaid with five lengthways strips of flat iron strap, rivetted to each of the five cross members. The five cross members and side rails are made of thick iron bar. The five lengthways straps are of thin iron strapping. Altogether a heavy, sturdy bed. At some time is has been painted black (possibly original colour) and white/ cream 'stars' have been painted to decorate the headboard. (Description by George Trotter).
