a) Brown leather suitcase with a silver coloured plate attached below the handle reading 'PRESENTED TO/ T.L. HICKS. ESQ - / AS A TOKEN OF ESTEEM/ BY SPORTING BODIES AND RESIDENTS OF/ BALLIDU AND SURROUNDING DISTRICTS/ - JANUARY 8TH 1936-'. On each side of the case are the initials 'T.L.H.' has been embossed in black. The corners are reinforced with leather caps and there are five protective studs on the two base (on opposite the handle and the other opposite the lid). Inside, the case is lined with mustard coloured fabric and the side opposite the handle is fitted with seven leather pouches of different sizes. On the lid is a flap (for documents?) buckled by two leather straps. There is a sticker on the base in black, blue, gold and green, featuring a globe within a geometric-styled shape and the words 'THE F S SIGN/ OF QUALITY'. In a diamond shape on the locks is 'BRITISH MADE/ PAT NO....734' and above the catch, 'RUSTLESS'. The case is secured by a detachable leather strap.
b) In first pocket, a small box with 'DICKINSON'S/ CRYSTAL/ IVORY/ VISITING CARDS/ DE LUXE' within a scroll-like decoration on the lid, and on each end, 'DICKINSON/ IVORY CARDS' and a shield with a rampant lion. inside are 18 crads lettered 'MR. T. L. HICKS'.
c) In the second pocket, a silver-coloured stainless steel soap container decorated across the top with a grid of parallel ridges. Some smudges of soap remain inside.
d) Leather backed mirror with a folding stand and metal trim.
e) In fourth pocket, cylindrical glass container witha silver-coloured metal lid. the glass has been cast so that the round comprises many adjoining flat sections. Inside, are 2 tweezers, a pin with a round metal head and 6 assorted safety pins.
f) In fifth pocket, a small keyring with 5 small keys, two of which fit the suitcase lock.
g) Cylindrical glass container similar to, but taller than e. and with 7 holes in the lid. Contains 4 loose buttons and 2 more on a button card.
h) Clothes brush with black painted wooden head.
i) Oval brown leather container secured with a buckled strap. Probably contained a shoe cleaning kit but now a clothes brush. Was loose in the suitcase.
j) Clothes brush inside case i). Nylon bristles are set in a wooden head which has a cap of silver metal decorated with a square-on-a-square plain area with the remainder in an all-over scale pattern.
k) One penny piece with the crowned head of King George V and marked 'GEORGIUS V D G BRITT: OMN: REX F.D.IND: IMP'. On the obverse within a circular border, 'ONE PENNY' and outside the border, 'COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - 1923'.
l) One penny piece with the uncrowned head of King George VI and marked 'GEORGIUS VI D:G: BR: OMN: REX FIDEI DEF.' On obverse, a leaping kangaroo and 'AUSTRALIA/ 1952/ PENNY'.
m) Writing guide - a grid of parallel lines for placing under unlined writing paper. On the reverse, a rampant lion within a shield and 'LION BRAND/ FINE QUALITY STATIONERY/ FOR HOME, SCHOOL, BUSINESS AND TRAVEL'. Listed are the 6 different varieties of 'CROXLEY' watermarked stationery available.
n) Two sheets of writing watermarked 'SATISFAGA BOND'.
o) Page from 'THE W.A. RAILWAY & TRAMWAY/ INSTITUTE/ MAGAZINE' featuring an article on 'MORALE - WHAT IS IT?'. On the reverse is part of an article on the new 3-unit diesel-electric trains, dated 1 September 1949. Found in the case and obviously valued by Hicks.
p) Page from 'THE WESTERN MAIL' 5 November 1942, entitled 'A PIONEER PASSES/ THE LATE MR J.A. HICKS.' an obituary for Terence Hicks' father. Both the deceased and his father before him, were drapers in Western Australia. There is also a verse about daylight saving with cartoon illustrations.
