STAMP ALBUMS, -2- Volumes

H1990.62

Stamp album in two volumes with decorative leather cover. There is a small brass ? stopper the shape of a jelly mould in each of the four corners of the front and back covers. The front is extensively decorated with gold which highlights the floral pattern. There is some gold on the spine of each volume as well as the numbers "I." and "II." respectively. The outside edge of the pages has also been painted gold. Each volume may be locked with a brass lock which can expand, presumably as the collection grows larger. In the centre of the front covers is an oval disc, probably metal but may be plastic. In relief it shows a male child-like figure carrying a horn with what may be an envelope raised above his head. His trousers are rolled up to the knees and he is wearing a curious long top with crossed straps. There is a pouch at his waist and he is bare-footed. One wing is visible from behind him. Inside the front and back covers of Volume II is an intricately patterned design in brown. Then follows a blank page, then one with the following information : "THE / ILLUSTRATED / POSTAGE STAMP / ALBUM / ILLUSTRATED WITH / 3700 ENGRAVINGS, 45 PORTRAITS OF REGENTS AND 96 NATIONAL ARMS OF / VARIOUS COUNTRIES / BY RICHARD SENF. / Fourth Edition". Below this is a logo with the words "CHAMPION / EDITION". Then the following information : WHITFIELD, KING & CO., / Stamp Importers and Philatelical Publishers. / IPSWICH / LACEY STREET." On either side of the last two words are "ALL RIGHTS RESERVED]" and "[ENTERED AT STATIONERS HALL". Below this is "-MADE IN GERMANY.-". The next page states "AFRICA". There follow many pages, mostly one per country. Each page has pictures of stamps, and information about area, population, capital and population of capital, and coinage. Next to the spaces or drawings of stamps there is often a date. Most of these fall in the period 1850s to 1880s and one was observed at 1890. It is from this information that the manufacture and use dates of the albums were estimated.
