HALF PETTICOAT

H1990.17

White lawn petticoat with elasticised waist and opening at back with three buttons. It is decorated with a wide tuck about halfway down the length of the petticoat. Below this is an insert of strong lace. Then there is a gap and then the same decoration again, followed by two tucks at the bottom. The top section has been made in five unequally sized panels. The bottom is in three approximately equal panels. There is a slit at the back with three pearlshell buttons and three button holes. Next to each button is a small embroidered "eye" which looks like it may have been used with hooks to close the back of the petticoat. The waist is simply the top edge of the petticoat folded over and sewn. Next to the row of machine stitching on either side of the elastic is a row of tacking. The hem also appears to have been taken up and is stitched by hand. The remainder of the garment is machine-stitched. This petticoat was accepted because it has been altered to an elasticised waist and it was also thought that the elastic may be of interest.
